Miyoshi Basin

A mountain basin in the northern part of Hiroshima Prefecture. Like the Tsuyama, Katsuyama, and Tojo basins, it is one of the basins between the Chugoku Sekiryo Mountains and the Kibi Plateau. The surrounding rivers, such as the Saijo River, the Basen River, the Eno River, and the Kannose River, join together in the basin and flow northwestward as the Gono River. The lowlands of the basin are 150 to 170 meters above sea level, and the northern side of the basin forms a fault cliff, while the southern side is a Tertiary period hilly mountain range that continues to the Kibi Plateau. The climate is slightly more continental than the Seto Inland Sea coast, with cold winters and a little more snow. In autumn, thick fog covers the surface from dawn until 10 a.m., and from a high place it looks like a sea of ​​fog. The hilly area on the southern side of the basin is home to many ancient tombs, such as the Jorakuji-Nanattsuzuka Tomb Group (a national historic site).

広島県北部にある山間盆地。津山、勝山、東城(とうじょう)などの盆地と同じように中国脊梁(せきりょう)山地と吉備(きび)高原の間にある盆地列の一つ。周辺から西城川、馬洗(ばせん)川、可愛(えの)川、神野瀬(かんのせ)川などが盆地内で合流し、江の川(ごうのかわ)となって北西へ流れる。盆地の低地は標高150～170メートル、盆地の北側は断層崖(がい)をなし、南側は第三紀の丘陵性山地で吉備高原へ続いている。気候は瀬戸内沿岸よりやや大陸的で冬寒く、雪がやや多い。秋には明け方から午前10時まで濃霧が地表を覆い、高所から見ると、霧の海のように見える。盆地の南側の丘陵地帯は浄楽寺・七ツ塚古墳群（国史跡）など古墳が多い。
