Aleksandrovsky village

...Population: 1,431,000 (1993). It began as the village of Aleksandrovsky, which was established in 1893 when the Trans-Siberian Railway's Ob River Bridge was constructed, and was renamed Novonikolaevsk in 1895. It became a city in 1903, and in 1925 it was renamed to its current name, which means "New Siberia." At the time it was a typical merchant town, reminiscent of an American frontier, and was nicknamed "Sif Chicago (Siberian Chicago)."
