It began as the village of Aleksandrovsky, which was established in 1893 when the Trans-Siberian Railway's Ob River Bridge was constructed, and was renamed Novonikolaevsk in 1895. It became a city in 1903, and in 1925 it was renamed to its current name, which means "New Siberia."
