It was Columbus's party that first brought corn, native to the New World, to the Old World. The Spanish word maíz, meaning corn, comes from the language of the native land that Columbus' men heard when they acquired corn in Cuba, and in English it is called maize, and in French it is called maïs. After the first half of the 16th century, corn spread through the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean region to Eastern Europe and North Africa.
