Ibota noki - Ibota noki

Japanese: イボタノキ - いぼたのき
Ibota noki - Ibota noki

A deciduous shrub in the family Oleaceae (APG classification: Oleaceae). Young branches are thin and densely covered with short hairs. The leaves are opposite, narrowly oblong, 2-5 cm long, without sawtooth edges, and have a dull surface. In May and June, small white flowers grow densely in clusters at the ends of the branches. The corolla is tubular funnel-shaped with four lobes at the end, and has two stamens and one pistil. The fruits are elliptical or spherical, 5-7 mm long, and ripen purple-black in October. They are commonly found growing in mountains and fields, and are distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Korea. Leaves with dense hairs on the undersides are called velvet warts. The secretion of the male larvae of the bald cricket that parasitize the bark is called bald wax, and is used to make doors slide smoothly, to polish furniture, and medicinally to protect damaged skin. The bald cricket genus is distributed from the temperate and subtropical zones of Europe and Asia to Malaysia and Australia, and there are about 50 species in the world, with 9 species found in Japan.
