It is also called the Uesugi Remainers Uprising or the Uesugi Family Remainers Uprising (Echigo Fuzokushi). It was one of the local battles in the eastern part of the country related to the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 (Keicho 5). In research, it is known as one of the peasant uprisings and local feudal lord uprisings in the early modern period. In 1598 (Keicho 3), Uesugi Kagekatsu was in conflict with Hori Hideharu, the new lord of his former territory of Echigo (Niigata Prefecture), over the handling of matters after the transfer of Aizu (Fukushima Prefecture) to another province. In June 1600, he refused Tokugawa Ieyasu's request to go to Kyoto and was attacked by Aizu. The following month, he dispatched troops to Echigo in response to the uprising of Ishida Mitsunari. The Uesugi forces led by Okuni Saneyori and Sato Jinsuke invaded the Uonuma, Koshi, and Kanbara regions of Echigo from three directions: Rokujurigoe, Yatsujurigoe, and Tsukawaguchi, encouraging rebellions among the former residents of the territory. They attacked Hori's subsidiary castles in Shimokura, Zaodo, Tochio, Sanjo, Sugana, and Tsugawa, but were defeated by a counterattack from the Hori clan. This rebellion and fighting spread widely across the Chuetsu region and lasted for nearly two months. The core of the rebellion was thought to be the samurai and village headmen of the upper classes of the rural areas, and the Hori clan's harsh postwar measures led to the disintegration of the old medieval farming villages and are considered to have marked a turning point in the separation of soldiers and farmers in the region.
