...Kneeling on the ground to show respect when a person of high rank passes by. Kneeling is an ancient Japanese etiquette practice, whether inside or outside a building. The Gishi Wajinden states that "either crouching or kneeling, with both hands on the ground to show respect." After the Taika Reforms, kneeling was abolished and standing was adopted (imperial order of September 11th year of Tenmu's reign), but it was not performed. Kneeling outdoors, or dogeza, appears in the Koan Rei-setsu, and in the Edo period, common people were made to do dogeza when feudal lords passed by. *Some of the terminology explanations that refer to "kneeling" are listed below.
