〘noun〙① The region on Earth from the equator to the Tropics of Capricorn. A term used from the Edo period to the early Meiji period that today means "tropics." *Hyoarakiji (around 1848-50) Preface: "That is, the country directly under the equator. The area between 27 and a half degrees north and south from directly under the equator is called the subtropics."② Of the temperate zones on Earth, the area closest to the subtropics. Warm temperate zone. [Additional notes]① was used in maps by Nagakubo Sekisui and Hashimoto Muneyoshi, and was relatively widespread, and was used even in the Meiji period in Fukuzawa Yukichi's "Sekai Kokujin" and Kume Kunitake's "Beio Kairan Jikki."
