A general term for the gecko genus Eublepharis , which has lizard-like characteristics despite being a member of the gecko family. It grows to about 16cm in length. Unlike ordinary geckos, its eyes are not covered with transparent scales, and its upper and lower eyelids are movable, allowing it to close its eyes. Each toe is long and thin, and the subtoe plates are not suction cup-like. In Japan, there is only one species, Kuroiwa's ground gecko E. kuroiwae , which is distributed on Tokunoshima Island and the Okinawa Islands, and is divided into five subspecies. It lives in forests and around settlements in flat and mountainous areas, is nocturnal, and hides in caves and stone walls during the day.
