Masatoyo Yamana

A military commander in the Sengoku period. He was the second son of Mochitoyo and the younger brother of Noritoyo. Following the death of his elder brother Noritoyo, who had succeeded him as head of the family before the Onin War, in September 1467, he inherited the family headship and the territories including Tajima. During the great war, his father Mochitoyo, who was the commander-in-chief of the Western Army, died, and the following year in 1474, he made peace with Hosokawa Masamoto (son of Katsumoto), the commander-in-chief of the Eastern Army, and was appointed as the guardian of Tajima and Yamashiro. After the war, he pacified Inaba and Hoki, and from the 12th year of the same year onwards, he fought a fierce battle with Akamatsu Masanori in an attempt to retake Harima, Mimasaka, and Bizen, but failed, and in 1488, he withdrew his troops.

戦国時代の武将。持豊の次子,教豊の弟。応仁の乱以前に家督を継いでいた兄教豊が応仁1(1467)年9月に病死したのを受けて,家督と但馬以下の領国を継いだ。大乱中,西軍総帥であった父持豊が死ぬと,翌文明6(1474)年には東軍総帥細川政元(勝元の子)と講和し,但馬,山城の守護に任ぜられた。乱後は因幡・伯耆を平定,同12年以降は播磨,美作,備前の奪回を目指して赤松政則と死闘を展開するが果たさず,長享2(1488)年には撤兵した。
