Canut, Y.

He gained popularity playing the role of a "war hero" in films such as "Corregidor" (1945) and "Sands of Iwo Jima" (1949), and was recognized as a first-class star with his acting ability and dignity, playing a variety of roles from a young cowboy to an older man in the western film "Red River" directed by H. Hawks. Thereafter, in a series of Ford films such as "The Yellow Ribbon" (1949), "The Quiet Man" (1952), and "The Searchers" (1956), he played the main character who longs for "family" but is rejected from it, and in Hawks films such as "Rio Bravo" (1959) and "Hatari!" (1962), he embodied the "John Wayne myth" as a hero endowed with human kindness, which was different from the conventional perfect hero. His distinctive walking style, called the "rolling walk," was a trademark that he developed with his close stuntman friend Yakima Canute (the stunt director for Stagecoach, who did all of John Wayne's stand-ins). He also invented the fighting style and choreography with Yakima Canute, and it is said that he created the basis for the fight scenes in Western movies that followed.

From "Stagecoach"

...The location, Monument Valley, Arizona, with its towering rock formations, became a symbolic landscape of the West. The climax of the chase between the Indians and the stagecoach combines the skill of moving shots full of speed, Ford's bold montage that broke the rules of film up to that point, and the wild work of the famous stuntman Yakima Canute to create an unparalleled excitement, making it an immortal scene in the history of action movies and often quoted in other films. There is an anecdote that Orson Welles learned film techniques by watching Stagecoach every night for a month before shooting Citizen Kane.

Japanese:
