A term used in Chinese archaeology to distinguish between different types of pottery. Other examples include brown pottery, gray pottery, black pottery, and white pottery. Red pottery is fired in a well-ventilated kiln using an oxidizing flame, and is light reddish brown in color and harder than brown pottery. Fine-mud red pottery is a refined product made by elutriating the clay body, while coarse red pottery with sand particles is used for pottery made from clay body containing additives. The former is mainly used for tableware, and the latter is mainly used for cooking vessels. It appeared during the Cishan and Pei Ligang cultures, which are currently the oldest agricultural cultures in the Central Plains region, and developed in the North China region during the Yangshao, Dawenkou, and Hongshan cultures.
