…In October 1641, the Irish (Catholic) rebellion against the Scottish and English (Protestant) began in the Ulster region of Ireland. It gradually spread throughout the country, and eventually, under the leadership of the Catholic clergy, the Kilkenny League (1642) was formed, demanding religious freedom, self-government, and the restoration of lost lands. Under the command of Owen Roe O'Neill, the rebellion was often victorious in battle, but was unable to subjugate the entire country, and was almost completely suppressed by Cromwell in 1649-50.
