It is an architectural style in which the roof resembles a half-open book with both ends cut off at the ridge, and is called gabled. The shrine buildings of Sumiyoshi Shrine in Osaka, Ise Shrine, and Izumo Taisha Shrine are of this style. In ancient times, it was called Shinya, and is more prestigious than hipped roof construction. It can still be seen in various places today. Also, an entrance on the gable side is called gabled, and one on the flat side (the side parallel to the ridge) is called flat-fronted.
