Kiritsukemono - Cut-out crest
〘 noun 〙 A crest is a pattern made by cutting out a crest from a white cloth of the same material and sewing it onto a plain garment or haori coat so that it is not noticeable. It is used as an alternative to dyeing out a crest when making a new one or changing it. 〘名〙 無地の衣服、羽織などに、同質の白布に描いた紋を切り抜いて、目立たないように縫いつけたもの。紋を新しくしたり、変えたりするときに、染め抜くかわりとして行なう。昌平紋。※随筆・貞丈雑記（1784頃）八「縫め付（今は切つけ紋と云）の紋のきはきはに、左よりと右よりの糸を并べふせてとぢ付くる」
