Along with systematic climatology, it forms part of climatology. A climatology is a faithful and accurate description of the climate in a certain place or region, with the main purpose being to compare it with other regions. In other words, the main purpose of a climatology is to describe the phenomenon itself, rather than to explain the cause or mechanism of the phenomenon. In this respect, it differs from systematic climatology, which seeks to investigate the universality or laws of climate. In the history of the development of climatology, the seeds of climatology appeared in the 18th century, when climate observations such as monthly and annual average values were organized.

系統的気候学と共に気候学の一部を形成する。気候誌は，ある場所や地域における気候を忠実･正確に記述するもので，他の地域との比較が主たる目的となる。すなわち，気候誌においては，現象の原因やその機構についての説明よりも，現象自体の記述を主目的とする。この点，気候の普遍性あるいは法則性を究明しようとする系統的気候学とは異なる。気候学の発達史の中では，18世紀に，月平均値や年平均値といった気候観測値が整理され気候誌の芽が現れた。
