Climate limits

Japanese: 気候限界 - きこうげんかい

The limit or regional limit of vegetation or crop growth based on climatic factors. It is used widely for plants and other things whose distribution is restricted by climate. The climate has a particularly strong influence on tree growth and crop cultivation, so the climatic limits are relatively clear. Of course, for cultivated crops, the climatic limits vary depending on the variety and cultivation techniques. For example, palm trees, which are tropical plants, cannot grow in low-temperature climates, so their distribution is limited to low-latitude regions, and the isotherm of the coldest month average temperature of 18°C is the climatic limit of their distribution.

気候上の要因に基づく植生や作物の生育の限界，もしくはその地域限界。植物に限らず分布が気候に制約されるものについては広く用いられる。樹木の生育や作物の栽培は特に気候の影響が強いので，気候限界が比較的明瞭に現れる。もちろん栽培作物については，品種や栽培技術によって気候限界が異なる。たとえば熱帯植物であるヤシは低温な気候では生育できないので，分布は低緯度地帯に限られ，最寒月平均気温18℃の等温線が分布の気候限界になっている。
