Luciano Berio

Luciano Berio

Italian composer. Along with Nono and Bussotti, he is one of the leading figures in Italian avant-garde music after the Second World War. Since becoming director of the phonetics studio established at the Italian National Television's Milan branch in 1955, he has developed an interest in electronic music and computer music. Compared to his contemporaries, particularly Boulez and Stockhausen, who were also active at the Darmstadt Summer School and with whom he is often compared, he is characterized by his lack of shyness towards tonality, and he has produced works such as Sinfonia (1968) that are like collages of classical symphonies by Debussy and Mahler. His representative works include Theme Joyce Homme (1958) for female voices and electronic sounds, the chamber music series Sequenza Nos. 1-14 (1958-2002), the vocal work Circles (1960), the play Laborintus II (1965), the opera The True Story (1982), the orchestral work Formazioni (1987), and the opera News of Places (1999). He also conducts and directs.
