Fireball

A particularly bright meteor. Its name comes from the fact that it looks like a flying ball of fire. There is no strict definition of how bright a fireball must be, but it is often said to be brighter than Venus (magnitude -4), the brightest star visible in the sky.

Some meteors appear as bright objects called fireballs, but generally they appear alone, exploding mid-air, splitting into pieces scattering sparks, and leaving noticeable traces. Some produce loud explosions, but the most notable are meteorites that fall to the ground, and large fireballs that are so bright that it is as bright as midday appear even at night, and are often accompanied by a loud noise like a cannon.

とくに明るい大流星。火の球が飛ぶように見えるというところからきた名である。どのくらいの明るさ以上のものを火球とよぶか厳密な定義はないが、空に見える星のなかでもっとも明るい金星（マイナス4等級）よりも明るいものをいう場合が多い。

　流星群のなかに火球とよばれるような明るいものが現れることもあるが、概して単独で現れるものが多く、途中で爆発したり、火の粉を振りまくように分裂したり、また著しい痕(あと)を残したりするものも多い。なかには大きな爆音をとどろかすものもあるが、とくに著しいのは隕石(いんせき)となって地上まで落下するような場合で、夜でも真昼のように明るくなるほどの大火球が現れ、大砲のような大音響を伴うことが多い。
