A particularly bright meteor. Its name comes from the fact that it looks like a flying ball of fire. There is no strict definition of how bright a fireball must be, but it is often said to be brighter than Venus (magnitude -4), the brightest star visible in the sky. Some meteors appear as bright objects called fireballs, but generally they appear alone, exploding mid-air, splitting into pieces scattering sparks, and leaving noticeable traces. Some produce loud explosions, but the most notable are meteorites that fall to the ground, and large fireballs that are so bright that it is as bright as midday appear even at night, and are often accompanied by a loud noise like a cannon.
