This school was established by the Catholic Church (then called Kirishitan Sect) which was brought to Japan by Jesuit F. Xavier in Tenbun 18 (1549). From a few years after the founding of the Catholic Church until the expulsion of the missionaries in 1614 (19th year of Keicho), each church established its own primary school (about 200 schools throughout Western Japan), seminaries in Arima and Azuchi, collegios in Nagasaki and Bungo, academia (mathematics, astronomy) in Kyoto, and a noviciado (theological school) in Usuki. Especially at the secondary education and above level, the school developed advanced education in Latin, scholastic philosophy, basic theology, modern natural sciences, etc., based on the educational achievements of the Jesuits in Europe, while adapting to the actual conditions in Japan.
