Radix auricularia japonica (English spelling)

Radix auricularia japonica (English spelling)
A freshwater snail shell of the Lymnaea family (illustration). The shell is pale yellowish brown and translucent, reaching a height of 2.5 cm and a diameter of 2 cm. It is ovoid, thin and fragile. The coils are four-tiered but small and conical, with the last coil being much larger than the others. The surface is smooth and shiny except for the growth veins. The shell opening is large and wide, with no lid. The soft body has a large, broad foot, and triangular antennae on the head with small eyes at their base. The mantle is amber-colored with black spots. Because the shell is thin, the soft body shows through and the shell appears black.
