A general term for birds in the Aegothelidae family of the order Aegothelidae. This family is divided into one genus and seven or eight species. Length is 19 to 32 cm. At first glance, this bird resembles a frogmouth, but is closer in size to a nightjar. Like other birds in the order Aegothelidae, it has a small, flat beak with a hooked tip, a large mouth, and well-developed mustaches. This is thought to be an adaptation for preying on insects and small animals, and the mustaches function as antennae. It is nocturnal, hiding in tree holes during the day and becoming active in the evening. Its plumage is gray or reddish brown with a variety of fine patterns, making it difficult to find when it is perched.
