Papal infallibility - Infallibility of the Pope

...(1) The First Vatican Council (1869-70) This council was prepared in secret by Pope Pius IX himself shortly before the publication of the Syllabus (List of Errors) in December 1864, which denounced modern ideas, in order to "provide an effective remedy for the poison of modern ideas." A preparatory committee was established in March 1865, the council was published in June 1867, and the council was convened in June 1868. In February 1969, the Jesuit magazine Civiltà Cattolica published an article stating that French orthodox Catholics, who were not liberal Catholics, hoped that the Council would be concluded quickly to avoid long debates, and that the infallibility of the Pope would be adopted as an article of faith simply by a declaration from the Pope. This simplistic way of thinking was criticized by progressive bishops and theologians in Western countries, and the debate over whether the Pope was infallible or not boiled over. The meeting opened on December 8, 1969, and 774 of the 1,084 eligible members participated, including 41 representatives from Asia, 18 from Oceania, and 9 from Africa, all of whom were Western bishops.

…(1)第1バチカン公会議(1869‐70)　1864年12月に近代諸思想糾弾のシラブスSyllabus(誤謬表)を公表する直前ごろから，ピウス9世みずから〈近代諸思想の害毒に効果的治療手段を提供するため〉秘密裏に準備し，65年3月準備委員会を設置，67年6月公表，68年6月召集した公会議。69年2月イエズス会の《チビルタ･カットリカCiviltà Cattolica》誌に，自由主義カトリック者でないフランスの正統カトリック者たちは，公会議が長い論議を避けて短期間に終結し，教皇の不可謬性(無謬性)がただ教皇からの宣言によって信仰個条に採択されることを望んでいるとの記事が載ると，この安易な考え方に対する西欧各国の進歩的司教･神学者たちの批判が高まり，教皇が果たして不可謬か否かの議論が沸騰した。69年12月8日開会の会議には議員資格者1084名のうち774名が参加し，うちアジアの代表は41名，大洋州18名，アフリカ9名を数えたが，いずれも欧米人司教であった。…
