A Christian feudal lord of the Sengoku period. His background, along with that of his father Ryusa, is unclear, but he was born as the second son of Ryusa and is said to have been baptized as a Christian at an early age. His Christian name was "Agostinho" (Augustine), and both domestic and foreign historical sources agree that he was originally called Yakuro, later Settsunokami, and usually called "Tsunokami." In 1585 (Tensho 13), he played an active role as the head of the navy during Hashiba Hideyoshi's (Toyotomi Hideyoshi's) conquest of Kii Province, and soon became the ruler of Shodo Island, the Shiwaku Islands, and Murotsu. In 1587, he participated in the Kyushu Conquest, and was not punished like Takayama Ukon when the missionaries were expelled, but in 1588, he was transferred to the southern half of Higo (Kumamoto Prefecture) and stayed in Uto Castle. The following year, in 1589, he suppressed the rebellion of the Five Men of Amakusa, and from then on played a major role in the Bunroku and Keicho Wars until Hideyoshi's death. In 1592 (Bunroku 1), he crossed over to Busan in Korea as the commander of the first army, captured Seoul, and even occupied Pyongyang, but he thought it was impossible to conquer the Ming Dynasty, and early on he tried to negotiate with Ming's Shim Wei-kyeong to bring the war to a peace agreement. However, his plan did not work, and the Keicho War began, and he marched to southern Korea again. After Hideyoshi's death, he opposed Tokugawa Ieyasu together with Ishida Mitsunari and others, but was defeated in the Battle of Sekigahara and was beheaded on October 1, 1602, at Rokujo-gawara in Kyoto.
