(1) Soil types in polar regions and cold regions In polar regions, it is becoming clear that, unlike the conventional belief, physical weathering is not the only process that occurs, but that chemical weathering, with the participation of living organisms, reaches deep into the rocks. In the polar periglacial deserts not covered by the Antarctic ice sheet, there exists freeze-dried cold desert soil that does not contain humus and is composed of the accumulation of salts such as carbonates and gypsum. It is unclear whether cold desert soil is distributed in the Arctic region.
