A large evergreen coniferous tree of the Araucaria family. In a broad sense, this name is sometimes used as a general term for the Araucaria genus, which includes the Chirimatsu pine, but as a specific name it is the Japanese name for this species, which grows in New Guinea and eastern Australia. It grows to a height of about 30m and has dense, pointed, lanceolate leaves about 5cm long. The wood is hard and durable, so it is used for building materials.
