[Born] 1490. Naples [Died] December 2, 1525. Milan, Naples. A Spanish condottieri (mercenary captain) from the Avalos family, who came to southern Italy in the mid-15th century and became Marquis of Pescara. He served the Habsburgs as a commander of the Spanish army sent to Italy during the Italian Wars in the early 16th century. In 1514, he defeated the Venetian army and occupied Padua, then conquered Milan (1521) and Genoa (22), and in 1525 captured King Francis I of France in the Battle of Pavia, among other military feats. He died of illness during another siege of Milan at the end of the same year. His wife was the famous poet Vittoria Colonna. Pescara |
