Pescara, Ferdinando Francesco de Avalos
[Born] 1490. Naples
[Died] December 2, 1525. Milan, Naples. A Spanish condottieri (mercenary captain) from the Avalos family, who came to southern Italy in the mid-15th century and became Marquis of Pescara. He served the Habsburgs as a commander of the Spanish army sent to Italy during the Italian Wars in the early 16th century. In 1514, he defeated the Venetian army and occupied Padua, then conquered Milan (1521) and Genoa (22), and in 1525 captured King Francis I of France in the Battle of Pavia, among other military feats. He died of illness during another siege of Milan at the end of the same year. His wife was the famous poet Vittoria Colonna.

The capital of the province of Pescara in the Abruzzo region in central-eastern Italy. It faces the Adriatic Sea and is located at the mouth of the Pescara River. It is said to be the site of the ancient city of Aternum, but the city that spreads out on both sides of the Pescara River does not have a very long history. It was formed in 1927 by the merger of the old Pescara and Castellammare Adriatico. It is the administrative and commercial center of the region, with a fishing port, and is also home to chemical and other industries such as furniture and sulfur refining. It is also known for its bathing beaches. Population: 123,077 (2011 estimate).

ナポリ出身のスペイン系のコンドッティエーリ (傭兵隊長) 。 15世紀中頃に南イタリアに渡来してペスカラ侯となったスペインのアバロス家の一員。 16世紀初頭のイタリア戦争でイタリアに派遣されたスペイン軍を指揮してハプスブルク家に仕えた。 1514年ベネチア軍を破ってパドバ占領,次いでミラノ (1521) ,ジェノバ (22) を征服,25年にはパビアの戦いでフランス王フランソア1世を捕虜とするなど数々の武勲を立てた。同年末再度のミラノ攻城中に病死。夫人は詩人として名高いビットリア・コロンナ。

イタリア中東部,アブルッツォ州ペスカラ県の県都。アドリア海にのぞみ,ペスカラ川の河口に位置する。古代都市アテルヌムの跡といわれるが,ペスカラ川の両岸に広がる市街はそれほど古い歴史をもたない。旧ペスカラとカステラマーレアドリアーティコとが 1927年に合併して成立した。地方の行政,商業の中心地で,漁港があり,家具,硫黄精製など,化学その他の工業も行われる。海水浴場としても知られる。人口 12万3077(2011推計)。
