Fringing reef

Japanese: 裾礁 - きょしょう(英語表記)fringing reef
Fringing reef
A type of coral reef. Also called a coastal reef. It develops along the edge of an island or land. Its width is wide on gentle slopes with sandy beaches and in areas with weak wind waves, and narrow on rocky shorelines, in areas with strong wind waves, and where the seawater is prone to becoming turbid. It corresponds to the early developmental stage of a coral reef, and is thought to gradually transition into a barrier reef.
