…the sound produced by vertebrates when they use respiratory air to vibrate their vocal organs. The production of such sounds is called phonation. Vocalization is closely related to reproduction in origin, and in animals living in groups, it is used to signal to each other and to intimidate others. In higher animals, it is used to express will and emotions, and in humans, it has become the source of language sounds, making it possible to express complex mental content.

…the production of sounds by animals as a means of communication is called phonation, and the organs involved are called the sound-producing organs. With the exception of rare species such as the gurnard and the hawk, which produce sounds by rubbing their pectoral fins or by using the membranes in their swim bladders, the majority of animals with sound-producing capabilities are terrestrial vertebrates and insects.
