In place of fear

In 1951, he resigned from his cabinet position (he was Minister for Labour at the time) in opposition to the partial fee-charging of medical treatment, and became the center of the left wing of the party known as Bevanism. His main work, "In Place of Fear" (1952), was a confession of faith in democratic socialism. In 1955, he lost to Gaitskell in the race for the party leadership.
