General average action - General average action

...General average is defined in detail in the Commercial Code (Article 788 and following) and the York-Antwerp Rules (revised several times since its establishment in 1864). General average is damage (sacrifice damage) and expenses (expense damage) caused by measures taken by the captain to protect the ship and its cargo from common dangers (general average actions - such as casting off cargo, running aground, and evacuation). The general average system aims to share this damage equally among all parties involved.
