Along with "Gesammelte Aufsätze zur Religionssoziologie," this is one of M. Weber's major works. It was conceived as a volume that would serve as the basic theory for the "Grundriss der Sozialökonomik" course he edited, but it was not completed during his lifetime. His posthumous manuscripts were organized and edited according to his plan, and it was finally published in 1922. Although there are problems specific to books compiled after death (for example, the chapter organization is significantly different between the third and fourth editions due to changes in editorial policy), there is no doubt that this book is the culmination of his "sociological" achievements.

《宗教社会学論集Gesammelte Aufsätze zur Religionssoziologie》とならぶM.ウェーバーの主著の一つ。彼が編集した《社会経済学講座Grundriss der Sozialökonomik》の基礎理論をなす1巻として構想されたが，生前に完成せず，遺稿が彼のプランに即して整理･編集され，1922年にようやく公刊された。死後編纂された書物に特有の問題が存在するが(たとえば，編集方針の変更により第3版と第4版とでは章別編成が大きく異なる)，本書が彼の〈社会学的〉業績の集大成であることは疑いえない。
