On the east side of the strait is the Onomichi Bridge, completed in 1968. In 1970, the eastern half of the island (former Mukaihigashi Town) was incorporated into Onomichi City, and in 2005, the western half (former Mukaijima Town) was incorporated into Onomichi City. Tachibana in the south is known as a long-lived village with a warm climate and thriving flower cultivation. In December 1983, the Innoshima Bridge was completed. The island is connected to Honshu and Innoshima by the Nishi-Seto Expressway. Area: 22.37 km2 . Population: 27,259 (1996).

Mukaishima

In 2005, it was incorporated into Onomichi City. Formerly a fishing and salt farming town, it is now home to several large and small shipyards, and mandarin oranges and flowers are cultivated. Mukojima

A district on the east bank of the Sumida River in the western part of Sumida Ward, Tokyo. Former name of the ward. During the Edo period, it was a suburb, and the Hyakkaen Garden (historic site, scenic spot) in Higashi-Mukojima was a famous spot visited by literati and artists of the time. The place name comes from the fact that the land looked like an island on the other side of the Sumida River when viewed from Asakusa. Currently, the area is densely populated by small and medium-sized businesses. The Metropolitan Expressway Route 6 Mukojima Line runs along the Sumida River, and Sumida Park is located in the south.
