...Taro cultivation in particular was devised to adapt to various environmental conditions, and terraced rice fields and irrigation facilities were built. In the low coral reefs, where there was no water, ditches were dug and compost was placed in them. For clothing, bark cloth called tapa, made by beating and stretching the inner bark of a plant from the mulberry family, was used instead of woven cloth and was of excellent quality. Alcoholic beverages were unknown in Polynesia, but kava, made from a plant from the pepper family, had anesthetic properties and was drunk in a special manner at chiefs' meetings. ...
