... refers to symptoms such as difficulty breathing, coughing, wheezing, and hoarseness caused by laryngeal obstruction in children. However, in common usage, the disease with these symptoms was formerly called diphtheria, and is now called acute laryngotracheobronchitis. In a broader sense, it is also a general term for acute obstructive lesions of the larynx, and can include pseudocroup, inhalation of foreign bodies, and acute epiglottitis. This word, which was used in Scotland in the past to mean "crying with a hoarse voice" or "croaking of crows or frogs," was used as a medical term by Edinburgh physician Francis Home in 1795, and came to be used as a symptom name.
