Lille (English spelling)

Japanese: リール(英語表記)Lille
Lille (English spelling)
The capital of the Nord department in northern France. Located near the border with Belgium, it is the center of the northern French industrial region. It developed around the castle built by Count Baldwin IV of Flanders in the 11th century, and the waterway connecting Paris and Flanders was opened on the Lys River. In the 12th century, it prospered as a wool distribution center. It later became part of the French Kingdom and the Duchy of Burgundy, and in 1477 it became part of Spain. In the 16th century, it became the center of the Flemish wool industry. In 1667, it became part of France again. In the early modern period, various industries, mainly textile industries such as jute processing, cotton, linen spinning, and hosiery, flourished. As coal began to be produced in the southern suburbs, industries such as steel, machinery, chemicals, and brewing flourished, and it came to form a major industrial region together with cities such as Roubaix and Tourcoing. In 1967, the new city of Lille-Est was built in the eastern suburbs. It is the birthplace of President de Gaulle. Population: 225,784 (2008).
