Christian National Party

The Flemish parliament is also responsible for nominating six more Flemish and four more French members. Traditionally, the political parties were centered around three major national parties (the Catholic Christian National Party, the Party for Liberal Progress, and the Socialist Party), but since the 1960s, the Flemish and Walloon ethnic conflicts have divided the two parties, and with ethnic and right-wing parties from both regions accounting for 30% of the votes, coalition governments have always been unstable. Nevertheless, since 1992, a five-party center-left coalition government under Prime Minister De Haane of the Christian National Party (Dutch-speaking) has managed to achieve the difficult tasks of fiscal austerity and constitutional reform, despite the blow of scandals involving ministers and opposition from large-scale labor union strikes.

In Belgium, the federalization mentioned above has also brought about major changes in local government, dividing the country into three regions: Flanders (the five provinces of East and West Flanders, Antwerp, Flanders Brabant, and Limburg), Wallonia (the five provinces of Hainaut, Namur, Liège, Luxembourg, and Walloon Brabant), and the capital, Brussels. Under these regions are 10 provinces and 589 municipalities, with the capital, Brussels, including 19 neighboring municipalities.
