ADF stands for automatic direction finder. A device used on ships and aircraft to automatically detect the direction of radio waves sent from ground-based radio beacon stations. A loop-operated antenna is combined with a medium wave receiver, and the figure-of-eight characteristic is superimposed with the characteristic of an omnidirectional antenna to display the direction of radio waves on an indicator (called a radio compass).

automatic direction finderの訳，略してADF。船舶や航空機で，地上の無線標識局から発信される電波を受信して，その到来方向を自動的に探知する装置。中波受信機にループ作動アンテナを組み合わせ，その８字特性と全方向性アンテナの特性を重畳させて，電波の到来方向を指示計器（ラジオコンパスという）上に表示する。
