Youth movement

Japanese: 青年運動 - せいねんうんどう（英語表記）youth movement

A youth-centered movement, or an organized movement for young people. The former, as seen in the Wandervogel movement and the Free German Youth movement in the early 20th century, often arise in a situation of intensifying social contradictions, triggered by the idealism and romanticism characteristic of young people. The latter, which is also called youth leadership and is organized and promoted by a variety of motives and goals, including religious, political, educational, and cultural, are examples of youth-centered movements. The YMCA and YWCA are world-famous. The Hitler Youth before World War II can be said to be the ultimate example of state control.

青年を主体とする運動，ないしは青年を対象とする組織的な運動。前者の場合は，20世紀初頭のワンダーフォーゲル運動や自由ドイツ青年運動などにみられるように，社会的諸矛盾が激化した状況のなかで，青年に特有の理想主義，ロマン主義が起爆力となって勃興することが多い。後者の場合は成人が中心となって青年に働きかけるもので，青年指導とも呼ばれ，宗教的，政治的，教育的，文化的なさまざまな動機，目的によって組織され推進される。 YMCA，YWCAなどは世界的に有名。第2次世界大戦前のヒトラー・ユーゲントは国家統制の最たるものといえる。
