The title of the frontier development and defense official used during the Reconquista period of the Kingdom of Castile. It can be translated as Governor of the Frontier. The king granted military judicial authority over a certain territory, and the governor had a strong sense of autonomy, taking responsibility for the expansion and development of the occupied territory. When Spain explored the New World and expanded its colonies, it revived this title, granting the conquistador (explorer) the right to collect taxes, administer the territory, and appoint and dismiss officials and clergy, in return for a personal fee.

カスティリア王国の国土回復運動期に使われた前線開拓防衛の官職名。辺境総督と訳される。国王より一定領域に対する軍事司法上の権限を与えられ，占領地の拡大と開拓の責任を負う自立性の強いものであった。新大陸の探検，植民地の拡大に際して，スペインはこの名称を復活し，支配地域に対する徴税権，管理権，官吏・聖職者の任免権などを，コンキスタドール (探検家) に個人負担の代償として与えた。
