A theory that analyzes how consumers with a certain income make decisions at a given price. It is assumed that consumers have preferences and will choose the most preferable option. If there are only two goods, the consumer will choose the consumption amount at the intersection of the indifference curve, which represents the combination of consumption amounts of goods that the consumer finds equally preferable, and the budget line, which represents the combination of consumption amounts that can be purchased at a given price and income. It also analyzes how much consumption changes in response to changes in price and income.

一定の所得をもつ消費者が与えられた価格のもとでどのような意思決定をするか分析する理論。消費者には好みがあり，もっとも好ましい選択肢を選ぶと考えられる。２財しか商品がないとすると，消費者が同じくらい好ましいと思う財の消費量の組合せを表す無差別曲線と，与えられた価格と所得で購入可能な消費量の組合せを表す予算線の接点にあたる消費量を消費者は選択する。また価格や所得の変化に対して，消費量がどれだけ変化するかも分析される。
