...A rock shelter site in the grounds of Tenkaizan Otani-ji Temple in Otani-cho, Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture. A group of stone Buddha statues carved into the rock wall are famous as the Otani Rock Buddhas, located in the rock shelter of a tuff cliff on the left bank of the Sugata River, measuring 30m in width, 13m in depth, and 12m in height. It has long been known that this is a complex site dating back to the Jomon period, and in 1965, Tatsumi Shiro and others excavated the site in conjunction with disaster prevention work on the rock Buddhas.
