Russian-born composer and pianist. Born in St. Petersburg, his father was the famous Russian nationalist composer NN Tcherepnin (1873-1945), and he studied composition under his father and Lyadov. After making his debut as a pianist as a boy, he defected to Paris with his father in 1921. From Paris as his base, he was active as a pianist all over the world, and visited Japan several times from 1934 to 1936. He established the Tcherepnin Prize and called for orchestral works, introducing piano pieces by winners such as Akira Ifukube, Yasuji Kiyose (1900-1981), Yorinori Matsudaira, and Fumio Hayasaka overseas, giving a strong impact on the Japanese composition world. In 1949, he moved to Chicago and later acquired American citizenship. As a composer, he was influenced by Russian and French styles, and in later years he also used oriental scales. In addition to piano pieces, he composed operas, ballets, and chamber music. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
