… The name of the Young Germans seems to come from the dedication of Wienbarch at the beginning of “The Conquest of Aesthetics” (1834): “To Young Germany, not to Old Germany.” Writers belonging to this group are divided into the Right Bank of the Rhine group (Wienbarch, Gutzkow, etc.) and the Berlin group (Laube, Theodor Mundt (1808-61), Gustav Kühne (1806-88), etc.) according to their influence from Saint-Simonism and Hegelian philosophy. The “literary revolution” that they all aimed for was nothing less than a movement of intellectual elites who tried to bring about change in the situation through literature, without a political revolution as a premise. For example, G. Büchner, based on the revolutionary practice in Hesse, made a harsh criticism as early as 1836, saying, “It is impossible for the intellectual class to change society through ideas” (letter to Gutzkow). …

…　青年ドイツ派の名は，《美学征伐》(1834)の巻頭におけるウィーンバルクの〈老いたドイツではなく，若い(青年)ドイツにささぐ〉という献辞に由来するものと思われる。この派に属する作家たちは，サン･シモン主義やヘーゲル哲学からの影響関係に応じて，ウィーンバルク，グツコーらのライン右岸グループと，ラウベ，ムントTheodor Mundt(1808‐61)，キューネGustav Kühne(1806‐88)らのベルリン･グループに分けられる。彼らが一致して目指した〈文学革命〉とは，政治革命を前提とせず，文学を通じて状況の変化をもたらそうとする知的エリートの運動にほかならず，たとえばG.ビュヒナーはヘッセンにおける革命的実践をふまえつつ，はやくも1836年に〈社会を理念によって，知識階級の手で変えるなんて不可能だ〉(グツコーあての手紙)と，手きびしい批判を加えるのである。…
