The currency crisis that occurred under the government of new party leader Leonard James Callaghan (1912-) in 1976 was weathered by borrowing from the International Monetary Fund, but the party was forced to curb public investment and wages, which eventually triggered a series of labor disputes and led to the defeat in the general election of 1979. At that time, one-third of union members voted for the Conservative Party, which led to the Labour Party's historic decline, and this trend was further strengthened in the general election of 1983, when the party's share of the vote that year, 28.3%, was the lowest since 1918.
