Mount Nara

Japanese:
Mount Nara

A low mountain range that runs east to west in the northern part of Nara Prefecture, north of the Nara Basin, on the border between Nara City and Kizugawa City in Kyoto Prefecture. It is also written as Heijo-san or Nara-san, and is often written about in ancient poems such as the Manyoshu. There are many ancient tombs. Currently, the eastern half of the hills north of Nara City are called the Saho Hills, and the western half of the hills north of the Heijo-kyo ruins are called the Saki Hills. In ancient times, the Narasaka Pass in the east and the Utahime Pass in the west connected Nara to Kyoto, and now National Route 24, the Kansai Main Line, and the Kintetsu Railway Kyoto Line pass through the area. After the construction of Nara Dreamland (opened in 1961, closed in 2006), residential development progressed, and Heijo-Soraku New Town was created by the Urban Development Corporation (now the Urban Renaissance Agency).
