Wu-zhu-qian; Wu-shu-ch`ien

Wu-zhu-qian; Wu-shu-ch`ien
An ancient Chinese bronze coin with the inscription "Wuzhu." The Wuzhu coin, minted in the 4th year of Yuanhui (119 BCE) under Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty, weighed 5 shu (3.35 g) and is the origin of the Wuzhu coin. Wuzhu coins were minted from the Western Han Dynasty through to the Sui Dynasty, and there are many varieties. The basic shape is a circular square hole with an outer rim and the inscription "5" on the right side and "shu" on the left side, but there are also coins called Shu coins with the inscription "Wuzhu" reversed. Those from the Western Han Dynasty are generally heavy and well-formed. In the Later Han Dynasty, Wuzhu coins were minted in the 16th year of Jianwu (40 BCE) and are well-formed, but some are of poor quality. From the Later Han to the Sui dynasty, the Zhibai Wushu coins were minted in Shu, the Shenlang Wushu coins in Jin, the Neiguang Wushu, Daji Wushu, Dafu Wushu, and Dayotong Wushu coins in Liang, the Taihe Wushu and Yong'an Wushu coins in Northern Wei, and the Changping Wushu coins in Northern Qi, while the Sui dynasty produced the Small Wushu coins with a wide outer border in the first year of Kaihuang (581). In the Tang dynasty, the Kaiyuan Tongbao coins were minted in the fourth year of Wude (621), after which the minting of Wushu coins was no longer seen.
