Affirmative action, which was introduced in the United States to correct discrimination, results in some qualified members of the majority being disadvantaged. For example, as a result of preferentially admitting women to a university, men who scored higher than women on the entrance exam may be rejected because they are not within the university's quota. Since 1978, the Supreme Court has ruled that such reverse discrimination is illegal.
