[Antarctic Observation]
In 1952, the International Council of Scientific Unions decided to place special emphasis on observation in the Antarctic region during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) from 1957 to 1958. In 1955 and 1956, the US team under Byrd established Operation Freezing, and Australia, Argentina, Chile, the UK, the USSR, France, New Zealand, and other countries established bases and began active preparations. During this period, the British Antarctic Transcontinental Expedition led by Vivian Ernest Fuchs (1908-) left the forward base Shackleton in October 1957, arrived at the US-established Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station on January 20, 1958, and then arrived at New Zealand's Scott Base on Ross Island on March 2, successfully crossing the Antarctic continent. In November 1956, the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition left Tokyo Port on the Soya, and opened Showa Station on Ongul Island in Lützow-Holm Bay on January 29 the following year.
