A winter-hardy perennial or shrub in the Saxifragaceae family (APG classification: Saxifragaceae). Genus Saxifragaceae. Native to Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and eastern North America, six species are found in Japan. Used for flower beds and cut flowers. Leaves are 1-2 times trifoliate, and flowers are panicles. Flowers come in a wide variety of colors, including white, pink, crimson, and red, including horticultural varieties. Japanese species such as Awamorishouma and Akashouma are also used in gardens, but the ones that are particularly cultivated are Arendsii and Akebonosyoma , and Akebonosyoma cultivars such as Gloria ( red ), Peach Blossom (pink), Deutschland (white), Fanal (dark red), and Kern (pink-red) are also commonly cultivated. Dwarf varieties can be used to grow in pots, but for gardens, they should be planted in October or March. They can also be forced grown, and if kept at a minimum temperature of around 13°C, they will flower in about two and a half months, so they are often grown as potted plants or cut flowers. As cut flowers do not absorb water very well, they are shipped to the market after being treated with water.

ユキノシタ科（APG分類：ユキノシタ科）の耐冬性多年草または低木。チダケサシ属。中央アジア、東南アジア、北アメリカ東部の原産で、日本にも6種が分布する。花壇用、切り花用に用いる。葉は1～2回3出葉、花は穂状花序が集まり円錐(えんすい)花序となる。園芸品種を含めると花色は、白、桃、紅、赤など豊富である。日本産のアワモリショウマ、アカショウマなども庭園用に用いるが、園芸的にとくに栽培されるのは、アレンジーA. arendsiiとアケボノショウマA. roseaで、アケボノショウマの園芸品種のグローリヤ（赤色）、ピーチブロッサム（桃色）、ドイチェランド（白色）、ファナル（濃紅色）、ケルン（桃紅色）などもよく栽培される。矮性(わいせい)種を利用して鉢植えが楽しめるが、庭園用には10月または3月に定植するとよい。促成栽培も可能で、最低13℃くらいに保つと、約2か月半で開花するので鉢物用、切り花用によく栽培される。切り花の水揚げがやや悪いので、市場には水揚げ処理後に出荷される。
