Reverse formation

...Such pro-, as well as the aforementioned -ness and -y, are called "living suffixes." There is also a phenomenon called back-formation, in which, for example, the English word editor was misunderstood as being the suffix -or attached to the verb edit, which did not previously exist, and the verb edit was then newly created. This is the reverse process of normal derivation.
